The major industry is the nearby Sellafield nuclear complex, with which a large proportion of the population has links.
Whitehaven is also home of the West Cumberland Hospital, which is located on the hills above the A595. It has a 24 hours Accident and Emergency Unit.

Other attractions include the Beacon centre, Haig Colliery Mine Museum, Rum Story, Marina and Harbour and the Skate Park which is situated near the Whitehaven railway station.
Whitehaven's Harbour had its peak of prosperity in the 19th century when West Cumbria experienced a brief boom because haematite found locally was one of the few iron ores that could be used to produce steel by the original Bessemer process.
Whitehaven has also played host to a Maritime Festival, which started in 1999 and was held every two years, attracting an estimated 350,000 people to the small town.
