The REACT Foundation - Science & Engineering Shows

EVER keen to put the buzz into science, the REACT Foundation is bringing its Science and Engineering shows to West Cumbria this September to wow thousands of school pupils. And this year the shows will also see Year 9 (KS3) pupils see a slice of the action. According to the boffins at REACT, this year students will be able to "touch a cloud" and see how to make instant ice cream!

Science and engineering will be brought to life for a massive 4,000 school pupils across Copeland and Allerdale as The National Science Museum returns for its new tour.
The new ‘Super Cool' show will see over 2,000 Year 9 pupils join Plasticine Pete and Pam as they travel to the extremes of temperature, and investigate the incredible effects of the coldest substance ever seen - liquid nitrogen. The audience will get to blow up a balloon, Science Museum-style, linking into the new KS3 National Curriculum under 3.1 Energy, Electricity and Forces and 3.3 Chemical and Material Behaviour.

This year's ‘Feel the Force' Year 6 shows will be bigger and better than before with a new theatre style version for the return of Phil the stunt frog. Pupils and teachers will be plucked from the audience to take part in the mind blowing experiments at the interactive show.
The team, from The National Science Museum, will also visit Whitehaven's Mayfield School and deliver the interactive ‘Bubble' show. Billed as the Museum's most popular show, the amazing display will see bubbles of various shapes and sizes entertain the pupils. Students will be able to step inside the famous human bubble and learn how certain materials can affect the way others behave.

Pete Woolaghan, chairman of the REACT Foundation, said: "Following the outstanding success of the last three year's KS2 shows, we wanted to open up the National Science Museum experience for older pupils across West Cumbria. We're very excited to announce the new 'Super Cool' shows for Year 9s for 2010.

"The shows are designed to excite and inspire local youngsters to think about the part science and engineering plays in our everyday lives. Whilst the shows are energetic and fun, there is a very clear educational content at each show.

The REACT Foundation was established to try and stop the brain-drain of local talent from the area and to support the young people of West Cumbria whose skills and ambition will positively benefit the local economy. It awards bursaries to help local students in their first year at university. In 2009 West Cumbrian teenagers Andrew Messenger, 18, of Kirkland, and Richard McCormack, 19, of Frizington, were rewarded for their commitment to engineering with bursaries of £3,145 each. The two were awarded the cash when they gained a place on a university engineering course. The money will help towards the students' university costs.
