The Brickyard Carlisle
How could we forget about The Brickyard in our inaugural edition of The Carlisle Guide?
Well we didn’t and we couldn’t, you see as a musician of sorts myself and, having played many a gig over the last few years , The Brickyard is, to me, much more than a live music venue... it is Cumbria’s most honest live music venue, and any musician who has played there knows only too well that you can proudly boast about having done so. It’s also a venue to aspire to... a right of passage.
When entering it for the first time the atmosphere emits teenage angst, it is a venue where bands strike out and the crowds strike back.
You get the feeling that this is a place where hard work is undertaken and the guys make no bones about it, it is clean, it is tidy, but you know this isn’t, and never will be, a trendy wine bar or generate an atmosphere whereby punters spend their time looking at each other and swinging back £14 bottles of wine.
Andy and Mark aren’t here to make money over the bar, they are here to put bands on, live bands, real music, no matter the genre; from heavy metal screamo to beautiful acoustic sounds and everything in between. The Artic Monkeys – Birds vs Planes - Ash – Biffy Clyro – Kasabian – Colt 45 - Kate Nash – The Zutons – Kontiki Suite have all graced the stage, along with hundreds of other bands, many who have come and gone and are no more whereas some have gone onto dominate.
Andy Bartlett who manages The Brickyard says: “Our ethos is to bring something different to Cumbria and to continue to put big names alongside up and coming talent, no matter what the genre. We have always had a strong policy to highlight local talent. It's great to see fresh bands and artists sharing the stage with big names. It's not often they get to play on such a stage.
“Our main aim is to survive and carry on improving and re-invest, the goal has always to been to bring bands into town. We do it for the passion not the profit.
“It is hard as bigger touring bands want to hit the larger cities and we are fighting against the hungry agents and to some extent Carlisle apathy. That being said it's been a great year, the highlight for me this year has been Vintage Trouble who were excellent and The Computers are going to be massive, they were unbelievable.
What's coming up that grabs your interest?
“Focus, they are a 1970s prog band; they are the only act to feature yodeling to have charted and their guitarist was once voted best guitarist on the planet. Also IF on Sat Dec 3, it's a super group consisting of members of The Cure – The UK Subs and The Damned. That should be interesting..
