This Christmas is due to be a bit of a toughie for our local shops and businesses, with the global 'Credit Crunch' not far away.

I say not far away, as I don't think things are anywhere near as bad in West Cumbria, as they are in the South East of the country, where they have been making hay for the last decade.

Okay, we might not have as much of a disposable income as say two years ago, and yes, everyday things like food shopping has gone up along with fuel, which all affects our spend. Yet from talking to local businesses, here in West Cumbria, some are absolutely flying and have never had it so good. Many of them are doing fine but as expected, some are feeling the pinch. I suppose the weather this summer has had a more negative affect on a lot of companies more so than the 'Credit Crunch'.

To try and make life a little more manageable and fun this Christmas, we have teamed up with quite a lot of local Ccmpanies to offer our readers lots of genuine discounts.

All you have to do is take the vouchers with you and save money there and then.

When it comes to Christmas shopping, this year we can either jump in a car and travel outside of the county to the likes of Newcastle, Glasgow or Manchester.

We can then spend £70 on fuel, £15 on munchies, £10 on magazines (unless you pick up the free Whitehaven and Workington Guides!) to kill the boredom of the 5-6 hour round trip and £8 on parking. And then we come home and say "I saved £50"?

If you look at what we have on our doorstep whether it be the brilliant Workington Town Shopping Centre or the masses of local independents throughout West Cumbria in Workington, Cockermouth and Maryport, there is so much more than we realise.

In addition, when it comes to clothes, if you are anything like my missus, she buys things then takes them back, then buys things then takes them back? The good thing about buying locally is that if you have any problems, well it is a lot easier nipping down the road to exchange your items isn't it?

With so many independent shops in the area, it means that there is always the chance of finding something which is unique and different.

Again, if you have any issues, it is always easier dealing with a person as opposed to dealing with a call centre operative.

If you want that personal touch when it comes to Christmas shopping this year then spend locally, where your money will travel Further as opposed to you.
