Midday sun to shine on Workington Town Centre

Say goodbye to the dismal weather. For two weekends in August, Workington Town Centre will be lit up with an energetic, outdoor performance called Midday Sun.

Midday Sun is a street theatre piece that will be performed underneath The Hub in Workington Town Centre on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 August and Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 August at 12pm. Commissioned by Allerdale Borough Council and championed by its Town Centre Manager, Claire Driver, the piece will be directed by Storytree's Jeff Cook and performed by theatre practitioners Ian Douglas, Richard Gibb and Rosy Thurston. The project has been funded by Britain's Energy Coast West Cumbria and Allerdale Borough Council.

Designed to explore and celebrate our connection to the natural world and its cycles, Midday Sun is an environmental theatre piece lasting around 45 minutes. It will be a highly visual costume piece - think Greek epic meets Commedia del arte.

Jeff Cook of Storytree says, "The midday sun has reached its zenith, and after 4.5 million years is starting to feel a bit lost in the purpose stakes. Bring on the mid life crisis and a world of chaos for all earthly inhabitants. With the sun slightly distracted, and taking his eye off the ball, chaos ensues and the mere mortals are left to deal with the consequences."

"We are all guilty of taking the world and those around us for granted, but stop, think, and know, that there are moments in the history of the earth and in our lives where the balance, the equilibrium tilts just that little too far. Working on ‘Midday Sun' has been a fantastic opportunity to explore the relationship between the sun, wind and rain and the parallels within our personal lives."

Councillor George Scott, Allerdale Borough Council's Executive member with responsibility for Arts and Tourism Development, said: "This is a great opportunity for locals and visitors of all ages to enjoy some fun entertainment in the centre of Workington. We hope it will encourage even more people to come into Workington town centre and make the most of the wide variety of shops and cafes it has on offer."

Midday Sun is the second in a trio of street theatre pieces performed in Workington Town Centre. The first was Spring Tide which took place in May (and again during July in Cockermouth). The last piece entitled The Waltz of the Christmas Trees will be performed in December.

Midday Sun is a free, non-ticketed event suitable for all ages with no booking required. Simply turn up to enjoy the spectacle.
