Memory Lane open for business

VISITORS to the Beacon can take a stroll down memory lane this winter. A new exhibition in the Harbour Gallery features images of Whitehaven through the 70s, 80s and 90s.
"In Black and White" is an exhibition of photographs by Sid Lucas, a former resident of the town who has been photographing this area for more than 35 years.
Born and bred in Whitehaven, he studied at Carlisle College of Art and at the Royal Academy of Art in London from 1960 to 1963. Sid has taught at several schools and colleges and has also worked alongside professional artists and craftspeople in creative workshops.
The images all show Whitehaven and the surrounding area, some aspects of which have long disappeared. From portraits of memorable local characters to views of the wagon ways on the harbour side, visitors can reflect and remember how things used to be.
Beacon Manager Sue Palmer said: "This exhibition is full of memories and it's special because it shows a time that's not so long ago. The museum is full of images of the borough during the last hundred years. This exhibition shows the town and surroundings during the last 20 or 30 years, and it's amazing how much has changed in such a short time. Also, every framed picture is for sale. They'll make great Christmas presents!"
The exhibition continues until 3rd January. Admission to the Harbour Gallery at The Beacon is free, Tuesday to Sunday and School Holiday Mondays, 10am to 4.30pm.
